On the Occasion of the International Day oft he Victims of Enforced Disappearances

August 30

Al-Nidal Association for Human Rights commemorates the International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances, highlighting the importance of shedding light on the suffering of the victims and their families. We emphasize the urgent need to strengthen international and local efforts to ensure human rights, especially in the context of enforced disappearances that have affected many in Iraq.

The phenomenon of enforced disappearances constitutes a flagrant violation of human rights, as countless individuals and their families endure prolonged periods of uncertainty, unaware of their loved ones’ fate—an issue that demands immediate attention.

At Al-Nidal, we believe in the urgent need to engage with this issue, work towards uncovering the fate of the missing, and provide psychological and social support to the victims’ families. Furthermore, we are committed to achieving true social justice through reparations and by honoring the memory of those who have been forcibly disappeared or lost.

We also stress the importance of adhering to international obligations and aligning national legislation to enable victims, survivors, and their families to seek redress under the law, hold perpetrators accountable, end the cycle of impunity, and ensure that victims and their families are duly compensated.
